Mohamed Bourouissa describes contemporary society through its contours and takes a critical look at stereotyped representations. In addition to his preferred medium of photography, the artist also explores drawing, sculpture and video.
His work, which blurs the boundaries between fiction and documentary, aims to capture the social realities of our time by observing society from its margins.
He has been represented by the Kamel Mennour gallery since 2010. His work has been shown in numerous solo exhibitions: Rencontres d'Arles, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Centre Pompidou, le BAL (Paris); Barnes Foundation (Philadelphia); Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam); basis (Frankfurt); Haus der Kunst (Munich). He has participated in the Biennales of Sydney, Sharjah, Havana, Lyon, Venice, Algiers, Liverpool, Berlin and the Milan Triennial.
In 2018, he was nominated for the Marcel Duchamp Prize. His work can be found in major collections including LACMA, the Stedelijk Museum, the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Istanbul Modern and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris.
