François Chauveau was a prolific draughtsman and engraver celebrated in his time. His reputation surpassed that of his contemporaries and was equal to Sebastaien Leclerc's. Praising the poetic charm and richness of his compositions, Charles perrault mentioned him in his "Hommes illustres qui ont paru en France" as one of the greatestengravers of his time, on a par with Callot, Mellan and Nanteuil.
