Exhibition catalogue (English edition) : Treasure of the Holy Sepulchre - Versailles Palace (April 16th - July 14th).
These extraordinary works of art were sent to the basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem as well as to those of Bethlehem and Nazareth by the principal European rulers. In this way they paid tribute to these Holy Places and contributed to their splendour.
Some of these works of art are still used nowadays during religious ceremonies and will be showed for the first time to the public.
These sumptuous gifts are unique in the world, they show how the different European rulers rivalled each other in generosity to enhance the splendour of the Treasure of the Holy Sepulchre.
The immense power of fascination and attraction of Jerusalem arise from this exhibition as well as the diplomatic, political and religious stakes involved.
