This unique collection of etchings, assembled mainly between 1920 and 1935 by Frits Lugt (1884-1970), is characterised by early states and exceptional impressions. Each work was chosen by Lugt for its pictorial quality. Provenance research shows that the majority of the prints come from renowned collections.
Erik Hinterding is the author of this catalogue, which describes all the Rembrandt prints in the Frits Lugt Collection. Thanks to his years of research, through watermarks, copper plates and paper, Hinterding enables us to learn more about the production and distribution of Rembrandt's prints. His precise and meticulous descriptions of the prints, as well as his discoveries, provide future researchers with a new stimulus.
The catalogue consists of a volume of text and a volume of plates. The colour reproductions of the prints are, with a few exceptions, taken directly from the originals. At the end of the plate volume are around eighty X-rays of watermarks.
