When he was very young, Bonnard had a dream : to be a free and independent man who « seeks only to do something personal ». He lived through all the schools of painting of the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th, including post-impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism and abstract art, taking part in one of them along the way as a member of the Nabis. If his work moves us even more today than in the past, it is because the hope of his painting is a response to disenchantment with modernity.
Musée Bonnard pays homage to the painter on the 150th anniversary of his birth with an exhibition of the major works in its collection as well as a whole series of masterpieces on loan from France's leading public and private collections, including Musée d'Orsay and Musée national d'Art moderne in Paris.
The catalogue includes reproductions of all the works together with detailed and richly illustrated descriptions as well as an interview with Guy Cogeval and Isabelle Cahn by Véronique Serrano.
