Exhibition Catalogue Philippe Cognée, Domaine national de Chambord (18 may tp 12 october 2014).
It was following his stay at the Villa Médicis in 1991 that the artist invented a technique involving photographs and encaustic painting which would become his exclusive working process on canvas.
The objective photographic rendering makes way for a blurred, liquefied effect, even leading to a partial disappearance of the motif, and allowing for a certain abstraction to affect the figure represented.
In distorting figures whose motifs are nonetheless among the most ordinary and commonplace in real life, Philippe Cognée probes pictorial matter – he questions representation. The viewer perceives in the finished work an expression of loss: there is always something vacillating, melting, disappearing that the painter seizes at the moment of its vanishing, in the movement of evanescence which he contrives to transcribe in extremis.
