Bilingual Exhibition Catalogue Alexandre Hollan, Royal Château de Chambord (April 7th - Sept. 1st, 2013).
From his first solo exhibition in 1978, he elected to work from nature, on two subjects exclusively: trees and the still lifes he prefers to term “silent lifes”.
These two sides of his work are paralleled by research into movement (the trees) and immobility (the still lifes), as well as two directions in contemporary art: Rothko, dedicated to color, and Morandi, whom Hollan has called his artistic “father”.
Yet Hollan asserts his personal research, his own formal thinking into alternation of line and form, into exploring the “networks” of energy in trees and painted objects, and seizing their living presence through the use of various pictorial techniques –washes, charcoal, acrylic– and various supports such as paper, canvas and silk banners.
Oscillating between the visible and invisible, his work endeavors to paint the beholder’s feelings rather than only a perception of the outward signs of the world. Alexandre Hollan’s work is also a lesson in patience, and the tenacity that slowly brings about another order of reality, one that is deeper, more secret and more
