Exhibition catalogue "Extra-Large: Monumental works from the Centre Pompidou Collection in Monaco" at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco (13 July - 9 September 2012).
Too often dismissed as no more than a demonstration of technical skill, monumentality in art has rarely been approached contextually and for its own sake. Yet throughout the twentieth century it subbornly remained a source of expressive renewal: faced with the mass impact of visual languages like advertising and the cinema, artists took up the popular culture challenge by adopting similar gambits, notably that of playing on the relationship of scale between artwork and viewer.
In a refreshingly wide-ranging look at the art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the catalogue throws new light on the concept of monumentality in a series of essays, hitherto unpublished interviews with artists and commentaries on individual works.
In addition to paintings by Jean Dubuffet, Matta, Frank Stella and Yan Pei-Ming, the illustrations include sculptures, installations and environments by Giuseppe Penone, Christian Boltanski, Alain Séchas, Xavier Veilhan, Franck Scurti, Anish Kapoor, Bill Viola and others: a selection of contemporary masterpieces exploring the monumental in all its many forms.
