Exhibition Catalogue Fernande Olivier and Pablo Picasso, in the intimacy of the Bateau-Lavoir, presented at Musée de Montmartre, Paris (14 october 2022 - 17 feb. 2023).

For the first time, an exhibition and book are devoted to Fernande Olivier, an artists’ model, writer and artist. This work, bolstered by rare archival materials, analyses and contextualises her writings: Picasso et ses amis (1933) and Souvenirs intimes (translated as Loving Picasso in 2001). Fernande delivers a moving account of the female condition during her time and reveals the intimate world of the Bateau-Lavoir: Apollinaire, Braque, Derain, Laurencin Le Douanier Rousseau, Matisse, Max Jacob,Van Dongen, and the one with whom she shared her life from 1904 to 1912, Pablo Picasso.

“Books about the artists, painters and writers of whom I will speak are silent when it comes to their private lives, for the essential reason that they only tell of what their subjects were pleased to reveal publicly. I lived with them, closer to them than anyone else, since ‘Chez Picasso’ was also their house […] I lived through their existence, I saw them live, think, suffer, hope and above all work; living, thinking, suffering and hoping alongside them. Thus I can, without fear of seeing my memories misinterpreted, reveal their secret and laborious lives.” Fernande Olivier, Picasso and his friends, 1933.
