En cinq textes, dont deux inédits, Jean-François Chevrier propose une nouvelle approche de l’œuvre de Walker Evans (1903-1975).
À partir de ces deux termes, « trame » et « hasard », l’auteur entreprend dans l’essai principal du livre un récit de l’art moderne (Ernst, Arp et Taeuber, Cage) et contemporain (Kelly, Polke) qui croise la littérature (Mallarmé, Nietzsche, Musil, Walser) et l’art issus du surréalisme (collage, improvisation, combinaison aléatoire, hallucination, etc.).
A la fin des années 1980, Jean-François Chevrier organise deux expositions qui ont fait date : Une autre objectivité et Photo-Kunst.
