Influenced by Turner, Jean Fautrier's style was initially figurative, playing on contrasts of light. His first paintings were exhibited at the Visconti and Fabre galleries in Paris in 1924, where he was noticed by the collector Jeanne Castel.
A few years later, his style changed radically and became much more abstract. He inaugurated what was to become known as the "informal art" movement.
At the end of the Second World War, he painted the series of Otages in which he played with the pictorial material, superimposing layers of paste. In 1960, he was awarded the Venice Biennale painting prize.
This first catalogue raisonné of Jean Fautrier's paintings (over 1,200) analyses each of his canvases through technical analyses, reference texts and transcriptions of interviews and broadcasts.
