Catalogue of the exhibition Kings and Queens of Africa. Forms and Figures of Power, presented at the Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum (29 January - 25 May 2025).
With a collection of around 300 objects, in partnership with the Musée du Quai Branly and with loans from outside sources, this presentation offers a diverse and intriguing exploration of the culture and beliefs that are intimately linked to the lives of African kings and queens.
Nearly twenty African kingdoms are represented, from the West to the East, and from the centre to the south of the continent.
Each object bears witness to a history marked by technical excellence and creativity, providing a better understanding of the kings and queens who shaped the African continent and how their legacy continues to inspire and influence contemporary African art and culture.
A selection of contemporary artworks illustrates the enduring and evolving theme of power, in dialogue or counterpoint with the history of the kingdoms on display.
