Musée Musée Unterlinden, Colmar

From the 1960s onwards, the museum organised a number of exhibitions - Picasso in 1967, Roger Bissière in 1970, Poliakoff in 1971, and an exhibition of major Cubist artists in 1975, among many others. In particular, the museum showed a strong interest in the artists known as the "École de Paris" and the "nouvelle École de Paris". Works by Bazaine, Bertholle, Bissière, Manessier and Vieira da Silva, Poliakoff and de Staël all entered the collection at this time.

One of the museum's objectives is also to focus on the study and presentation of twentieth-century German artists and movements, particularly those who had close links with the French art scene: Hans Hartung, Willi Baumeister and Hans Arp. The presence of works by Otto Dix recalls the artist's link with the town of Colmar, where he was arrested and taken prisoner in 1945.

Between 2005 and 2015, the museum received a number of major donations, enabling it to bring in artists such as Derain, Hantaï and Séraphine de Senlis. Thanks to a major bequest from Jean-Paul Person, the Musée Unterlinden now has the richest collection of works by Jean Dubuffet. This bequest also includes works by Rodin, Alechinsky, Atlan, César, Chaissac, Fautrier, Rouault and Soutine. In 2008, a very substantial donation was made by Joe Downing's partner. To give the collection the space it deserves, architects Herzog & de Meuron were commissioned to carry out a superb extension project.
