This two-volume catalogue raisonné provides an insight into El-Gazzar's enigmatic oeuvre and modern Egyptian art in general. The first volume is devoted to the artist's paintings, the second to his graphic works, archives and photographs.
With an innovative and unique expressionist style, El-Gazzar depicted the folkloric inhabitants of Cairo. Later, he tried his hand at abstraction, depicting industrial machines and their effects on human beings.
Recognised during his lifetime, he was exhibited in France from 1949, then at the Venice Biennale in 1952 and at the São Paulo Museum in 1953. Today, his works can be found in private collections in Cairo, Alexandria, Rome, Paris and Brussels, as well as in major institutions around the world, including the Met in New York and the Mathaf in Doha.
